It was a day filled with intense beach volleyball action, hotter than the scorching mid-day sun. Last years champs are back at the finals to surprisingly face different challenging teams this time. For the women’s University of Sto Tomas (UST) faced Adamson (ADU) with the former having a thrice to beat advantage for sweeping the elimination while on the men’s, Far Eastern University (FEU) faced National University (NU) in a best-of-three finale. Who came out the victor? Let’s find out.
UST vs Adamson (Women’s Division)
UST with Maru Banaticla, Judy Caballejo and Pam Lastimosa entered the finals with a championship form sweeping the eliminations round while ADU bannered by Pau Soriano, Bhebs Pineda and Anwarl Mohammad had to go through a do-or-die game with DLSU to earn the right to challenge the defending champions. Each game was tight and played through to full 3 sets with the first set in Game 1 settled after 4 deuce points. ADU showed poise as they took set 1 of game 2 but in the end-game, UST, with Maru’s well placed drop shots and Judy’s powerful spike combo, proved too much for ADU even if Maru suffered cramps on the later part of the game. UST came out with a 19-21, 21-17, 15-10 victory. A glorious back-to-back championship for UST.
FEU vs NU (Men’s Division)
The men’s division is a demonstration of speed and power that it’s always exciting to watch those high-flying spikes and wall-tough blocks. The FEU (Arvin Avila, Karl Ian Dela Calzada, and Rodrigo del Rosario) vs NU (Josephenry Tipay, Edwin Tolentino and Sony Mark Tekiko) was a wringer of a match. NU took game 1 in 3 sets with while FEU took game 2 only in 2 sets to prove they won’t give their championship without a fight. The end game was in favour of NU with their resilient attitude giving their first ever Beach Volleyball Championship in UAAP. Ending scores 21-12, 20-22, 15-9.
