Gotta hand it to the people at the local digital company TOOCH for coming up with a Apple IOS game based on a classic Philippine folklore. The Juan Tamad game is a puzzle game that hopes to introduce the classic character in a fun and interactive way to children. The game app is free at Apple iTunes Store so there’s no reason not to try it out. If you’re wondering how it goes, I made a run with the game also asked the kids to try it out.
The Juan Tamad Game
Juan Tamad is actually a puzzle game about this legendary “lazy” character. Well the player would have to give Juan a nudge by helping him out to do his chores. What I liked about this game is the colorful graphics and artworks that’s very Pinoy. The music is also wonderfully done and gives a suttle ambient sound that’s not intruding especially when solving the puzzle. The level of difficulty varies, I found some very easy but a few real tricky even for an adult but I think it’s because of the controls which I’ll address next.
This is just the initial release of the game and there were some bugs as expected which could hamper the gameplay. One is that the puzzle pieces aren’t that responsive to control. Rotating the pieces can really be a drag to frustrating at times. I let my nephew and niece play with it and I also noticed they were having a hard time rotating the pieces. I also noticed that when a piece is behind Juan, it gets hard to retrieve the piece from the sleeping character that I just have to reset the game.
Juan Tamad is a really promising game with a great story, beautiful graphics, wonderful music that is somewhat hampered by poor controls. But despite that minor control issue, my 5-year old niece seemed to have fun with it and were able to solve some puzzles on her own. My 7-year old nephew though got easily frustrated when he couldn’t solve the puzzles and just wanted his action games back. As for me, I thought it was a very good initial release with rooms to improve . I’m hoping to see more levels on this game in future updates.
