I’m more of a backpack type of guy when I travel and seldom uses trolley-type bags unless I needed to. The wheeler I had before was a convertible Wenger, the other is a huge World Traveler luggage when I moved to a new location temporarily. Recently I went on a week-long trip up north and brought with me the Osprey Shuttle 22″/40L bag. Now here’s one bag I wouldn’t mind hauling around. Read on why.

Design and Build

I like that the Osprey Shuttle doesn’t look like a typically-boring trolley-bag out there. It is designed like a backpack in front, rugged and very much for the outdoors. Paddings are strategically placed on its frame that can surely take the beating from the rigours of travel. Their patented High Road Chasis are shock absorbent. I didn’t have problems pulling the bag on rough terrains like dirt roads. The Osprey Shuttle 22″ is also designed as a carry-on bag that can fit international airline standards. While I wasn’t able to fly with it, the shuttle perfectly fit on the legroom in between seats while on the coaster for a road trip.

Function

While the Osprey Shuttle 22 may look heavy-duty, it does weighs only 6 pounds, it’s so light for me to carry around. I like that the two handles (the top and the side) are generously padded, even if the bag gets heavy, it doesn’t hurt the hands while carrying it around.

Aside from the main compartment, there are three zippered pockets on the outside. The top holds more room for quick access items, the other front pockets are for other miniature stuff. The back has a pocket with the ID tag sleeve on the velcro-lock flap cover which is big enough for magazines or some books to fit. I was able to squeeze in my jacket there as well.

The main compartment zipper has a partially concealed design which I thought would be useful for repelling the rain seeping through the zippers. There’s also a security loop-hole for a padlock. For a 40L back, the main compartment is aptly spacious. I was able to fit in my Benro tripod (without the ball head) inside which is really nice, now I don’t have to worry about it as a missing luggage especially when I check them in at the airport. Using my cubes, I was able to organize my clothes, footwear and other items inside. I was able to bring clothes good for a week without even the need to laundry. I was able to also fit my Macbook Pro 13″ inside.

The main compartment also have also have organizing pockets inside, quite useful to place loose items and the flap pocket for undergarments. There’s also the compression straps to keep things together and organized that would make any obsessive-compulsive happy.

Verdict

The Osprey Shuttle 22″ bag for me is a well-designed, sturdy and functional bag for the casual and active traveler. I had the juniper green color and its style simply won me over by just the looks of it. It’s a very versatile bag and the front D-rings add possibilities of attaching other items. It’s also light for its size but can carry just enough for a week-long trip or more. The only thing I think it can improve on is adding another secure zipper for the top compartment stash aside from the main one but that’s just me.

The Osprey Shuttle 22 have a suggested retail price of Php 9,490 and available in R.O.X. Bonifacio High Street and will soon be available in other R.O.X. stores – Ayala Cebu, Ayala Centrio, Camp John Hay, MarQuee Mall, and The District North Point.
