Recently I was saddened to read the news that more than half of the Great Barrier Reef are at high risk of dying off because of severe bleaching. And what’s disheartening is, it is 175 times likelier triggered by human-caused climate change. If we’re not careful much of our reefs in our country could suffer the same fate. That is why Human Nature, a local manufacturer of natural personal care products, initiated the first Save Our Seas Coastival dubbed #SOSCoastival in San Juan, La Union. It’s a day of gathering like minded individuals with the passion for caring for our environment and spreading awareness on how we can practically contribute on preserving environment by choosing eco-friendly products in our daily lives.

This summer, with people heading to the beach, applying sun-block lotions would be a norm. I agree with Matador Network’s tips on “17 Incredibly Easy Things You Can Do to be a more Eco-Friendly Traveler”, the 1st being “Buy reef-friendly sunscreen if you’re going to swim in the ocean.” The reason being that commercial sunscreens contain the chemical oxybenzon that even small amounts can harm coral reefs. Human Nature is the maker of SafeProtect, the country’s first and only reef-friendly sunscreen.
Art, Music, Yoga and More
The Save Our Seas Coastival is an eco-friendly gathering of people. It’s a day of art, music and fun activities. Spearheading the gigantic 180 meter long sand art is celebrated muralist and climate justice advocate AG Saño. In the morning he already started with the outline of the sand art where fellow participants then help on defining the patterns and artworks using all natural materials – wood, sticks and buckets of water. By the end of the day the stunning aerial drone shot shows the entire artwork.
Throughout the day, there were pockets of activities in the area. I definitely enjoyed the indie music from Paula Mauricio and Yellow Submarine among other performers. There’s also the yoga session we joined instructed by Corey Wells. Poi and Capoeira activities were also happening at the same time. In the afternoon we had free time to finally enjoy the beach until sundown. I definitely enjoyed the feel-good vibe of the Save Our Seas Coastival. Not just the chill or activities but the sharing of good energy from like-minded people who care for the environment. I’m hoping Human Nature would make this an annual event and invite more people to save our seas.
