To be away from the town center for about 1.5km isn’t always a bad thing. For those familiar with Sagada, the nippy weather, the balmy sights of pine trees and mountains are one of the few reasons people escape to this charming highland town. But the growing popularity of this mountain town has lead to a bit noisy stay at the town proper. Finding Yabami Bed and Breakfast at Mabbay was a good thing. A small family-run in with large rooms by the roadside and lush view of pine trees at their backyard.
A Homey Vibe
Yabami is a play of words from an inverted “Mabbay” and “I” which means “Taga Mabbay (from Mabbay)” and it seems the owner, Derick is fond of crazy ideas, just check out that scooter on their roof top. It goes in with the architecture of the room using triangular shapes on opaque windows. Despite the somewhat kitschy elements, the place have 5 spacious rooms. We got one with a veranda overlooking the pine trees for P600 that can accommodate at least 3 people. It has two beds including a large private bathroom with hot shower. They also have a common area with a bar, fireplace and karaoke.
What I liked about the place is the family that owns it. I felt like a real house guest along with their friendly dogs and their long-term staying foreign neighbour nearby. We never did get to try their breakfast which seems to be unavailable at that time (which is expected at a peak season) so they just referred us to the nearby Misty Lodge.
Verdict
If one doesn’t mind a long walk to and fro the town center, Yabami Bed and Breakfast is a good option for its price. Besides, Sagada is a great place to walk around with its cool weather and great views. I wouldn’t mind staying here again for the peace, quiet, relaxing atmosphere and friendly people.
